Reporter Maggie Kent from 6ABC recently tagged along on a PECO Home Energy Assessment with Senior Home Energy Advisor Josh Bautista. The PECO team visited the Abington home of Marsha Levell, a long-time PECO customer.
Whether it’s crawling around a four-foot-high crawl space or climbing up into your attic, there’s no spot in your home Josh Bautista won’t access. It’s all in an effort to find out how and where you could be wasting energy and losing money. If it’s happening, he’ll find it.
Armed with an infrared temperature gun, blower door test equipment and a wealth of knowledge, Bautista can detect where hot or cold air is seeping out around doors and windows. That’s energy lost from your heater or air conditioner plus cold or hot air getting into your home from outside – and it’s costing you money.
Before he gets started, each PECO Home Energy Assessment starts with the customer’s bill. Bautista can identify potential savings simply by looking for spikes in energy usage. Some changes involve larger systems like HVAC and Insulation. Others can be small but effective, like switching to LED lightbulbs and changing when you run your washer or dishwasher.
Bautista says even small changes – like weather stripping, door sweeps and spray foam insulation around cracks or pipes can prevent heat/cooling loss and add up to real savings.
“For me, this kind of goes hand in hand with my composting and just being thoughtful and re-using things,” said Levell, noting that being environmentally conscious helped motivate her to schedule a PECO Home Energy Assessment.
