At PECO, we’re building on our commitment to protect and preserve the environment by playing a leading role in the Greater Philadelphia Region’s transition to a clean energy future to combat climate change.

Last week, Exelon Utilities made a significant announcement, setting forth on a journey that will have a marked impact on our company, our communities, and our planet. We are strengthening Exelon’s commitment to tackling the impacts of climate change by announcing that Exelon Utilities will reduce its operations-driven emissions 50 percent by 2030 and achieve net-zero operations-driven emissions by 2050.

To support the achievement of our Path to Clean goal, PECO is implementing programs to dramatically reduce our own carbon footprint, while also investing in our infrastructure to make clean energy solutions more accessible, affordable, and equitable for our customers.

Emissions Reduction Goal

PECO has a wide variety of initiatives either underway or planned to reduce our operations-driven emissions to support this 2050 goal.

  • We support the Exelon Utilities goal to electrify 30 percent of the enterprise vehicle fleet by 2025 and 50 percent by 2030, through a combination of fully electric vehicles, vehicles with plug-in idle mitigation units and plug-in hybrids.
  • We will adhere to the LEED certification commitments we made for 12 of our company buildings and purchase renewable energy credits for the energy use in our buildings.
  • We intend to remove all legacy transmission circuit breakers that are insulated by sulfur hexafluoride from our system by 2022 and replace them with newer, more efficient models.
  • We intend to replace all bare steel natural gas service lines by 2022 and complete all cast iron and bare steel natural gas main replacements by 2035.

We’re also making significant investments to modernize our energy infrastructure to make it more resilient in the face of intensifying weather patterns and innovating to develop more efficient ways to manage and modernize the grid by investing in research initiatives.

Supporting our Customers

A key element of our Path to Clean is supporting our customers in their efforts to embrace clean energy and reduce their environmental footprint.  This includes our ongoing efforts associated with our energy efficiency and conservation program, launched in 2009, which helps customers save energy and money while reducing their overall energy use and environmental impact.

We are actively working with our customers to expand solar adoption in our region, providing new and innovative ways to support customers with their efforts to install solar and interconnect to the grid. PECO was an active participant in the Pennsylvania Solar Future project led by the PA Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), and we’re actively working to create a more stable solar market in Pennsylvania through our solar credit procurement program.

Finally, we support electrification initiatives, specifically in terms of supporting our customers who are interested in electric vehicles (EVs) and providing incentives to support adoption. This includes offering discounts and programs to encourage the buildout of EV charging infrastructure, and advancing electrification through a dedicated taskforce that is actively designing affordable, clean and equitable offerings to support adoption of EVs.

Promoting a Clean Energy Future

We help the diverse communities we serve meet their climate goals by ensuring equitable access to new clean energy technologies, protecting and preserving the environment, and providing meaningful workforce development opportunities in clean energy fields.

We’re making community business investments to help cultivate startups working on innovative and impactful local projects through our Climate Change Investment Initiative (2c2i), and we’re advocating for and helping to usher in cleaner, zero-emission transportation in underserved communities through proposed incentives to electrify transit routes in Environmental Justice areas.  We’re also demonstrating our commitment to the environment through habitat restoration, vegetation management and our Green Region Grant programs, and we’re supporting the clean energy workforce of tomorrow through extensive workforce development partnerships.

This 2050 announcement is one exciting stop on our Path to Clean, and we look forward to sharing more with you in the coming months.
